My name is Megan Heimermann and I shall be graduating from Hartford Union High School this year. Throughout high school I have been highly involved with running, beginning with cross country freshman year. I continued cross country all four years of high school, being a captain my senior year, and did track as well, but focused more on sprinting and hurdling. Recently, I completed my first half marathon, and will be doing another one in May.
Along with running, I have been a member of National Honors Society for the last two years, and have done volunteer work throughout the community. In addition, I participated in a work camp through St. Killian's my junior year and traveled to South Dakota. The summer after senior year I will also be be participating in work camp and will be traveling to Pennsylvania. Senior Year I also joined Students Modeling a Research Topic (SMART) team. Through this I have worked on protein research and modeling with my team members, a medical researcher at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and students at MSOE who have made 3D models of our work for us. We will also be going to a conference in San Diego through this activity to integrate our findings with people of the medical community.
I have had an inclination the science, especially in the health field the past couple years, and this spark has been kindled through my involvement of the PLTW classes HUHS offers. I hope to further continue and develop my learning and expertise in the medical field the next couple years in college at University of Minnesota Twin Cities, getting an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry. Following that, I'd like to go on to Graduate School to do research, and eventually get a job in the medical field.
